Suramadu: The Longest Bridge in Indonesia

Suramadu Bridge is the bridge crossing the Madura Strait, connecting Surabaya (Java island) and Bangkalan (Madura island). Opened to public on June 10, 2009, the 5.4-km bridge is the longest in Indonesia and the first bridge to cross a strait. It was built within 6 years from 2003 to 2009, with the total cost of the project, including connecting roads, has been estimated at 4.5 trillion Rupiah.

The bridge has 2 lanes in each direction, plus an emergency lane and a dedicated lane for motorcycles. Total width is 30 meters (98.42 feet). It is the first toll bridge in Indonesia, fares are set at IDR 30,000 for four-wheeled vehicles and IDR 3,000 for two-wheelers. Debit of vehicles is around 12,000 daily. To accommodate boats and ships passing underneath, the bridge has 35 meters (114.8 feet) clearance.

The successful completion of the Suramadu Bridge has encouraged interest in the possibility of constructing a much larger Sunda Strait Bridge across the Sunda Strait at the western end of Java.
